A Cornish charity is urging companies to get in contact in a bid to assist more people with disabilities get onto our beaches.
Cornwall Mobility have been supplying all-terrain wheelchairs throughout the Duchy for a number of years.
The chairs are available for anybody who may not be able to access beaches because of mobility challenges – and now they want even more areas to offer the service.
It comes as the organisation increases their fleet, meaning there are extra opportunities for local seashore bars, restaurants, hotels and surf schools to become involved in the scheme.
Simon Blamey, chief executive, mentioned: “Every year between Easter and the end of September, chairs are deployed to beaches throughout Cornwall.
“It is completely free of cost to the individuals who wish to use the chairs.
“We partner with local operators, who’re in the vicinity or locality of a beach – it could be a surf lifesaving club or a restaurant or a hotel – and we enter into an agreement with these operators and they look after the chairs for us for the duration of their deployment.”
Beach chairs are designed for outside use and have large inflatable wheels which permit them to roll over sand and pebbles with remarkable ease, giving a comfortable and safe ride.
It means people with a disability or mobility problem can have the pleasure and freedom to access and enjoy Cornwall’s beaches where they might have found it tougher in the past.
Simon stated: “For people who aren’t able to access the beaches because of a disability or mobility problem, that might prevent them from having a great day out with family and pals.
“These beaches enable and facilitate that, so if people aren’t able to access that environment, they can do with these chairs.
“We have had amazing feedback.
“We’ve had some great stories about individuals coming on holiday to Cornwall and locals who haven’t been in a position to join in with seashore activities and it really makes their visit and trip to the seaside very special.”
The charity says they will be also launching a brand new chair this year – which has been designed and made in Cornwall.
Designed in collaboration with Falmouth University, the chair is made from fully recyclable materials and should be more resilient to the effects of the beach surroundings.
Simon mentioned: “We’ve worked with many operators who come back to us year after year, for instance, Fistral Beach has a chair year-round.
“We have now increased the size of our fleet and we’re eager to hear from business owners who would like a beach chair.
“There’s no cost to the business – we’ll come down and work with them and undertake a risk assessment to ensure the location is safe for both the owner and the people who are going to make use of it.
“We give them numerous information about how the chairs are to be used and we clearly lay out the obligations for the operator and we work together to make sure it really works for both organisations.
“Any businesses who want to become involved, please do get in contact.”
Any donations given to businesses to use the chairs are passed onto Cornwall Mobility to help pay for service and storage costs throughout the remainder of the year.
